The First Barkley Sound Knowledge Symposium
An integration of existing scientific, indigenous, and local ecosystem knowledge to support Comprehensive Ocean Zoning in Barkley Sound
Dates: February 9 – February 11, 2010
Location: Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, British Columbia, Canada

The First Barkley Sound Knowledge Symposium will be a unique 3-day gathering for the integration, summary, and synthesis of scientific, indigenous, and other local  knowledge of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Knowledge gathered will support the development of Comprehensive Ocean Zoning in Barkley Sound and broader Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management Plans for the West Coast of Vancouver Island, being coordinated by West Coast Aquatic.

THEMES:

• Historical changes in the Barkley Sound ecosystem, expectations for future changes, & future visions.
• Spatial and temporal distributions of natural resources, human uses, and related values.
• Indicators of the integrity and health of the Barkley Sound marine ecosystem & human communities.

Special Presentations
The symposium will begin on February 9, 2010 with special presentations on the M.V. Francis Barkley on her journey from Port Alberni to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre where the main part of the symposium will be held.  Special presentations will continue on the return trip to Port Alberni on February 11.
