\nThis paper examines the implications of environmental justice in the regime\u00a0for Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) currently developing in the European\u00a0Union (EU). An ‘ecosystem-based approach’ to marine management is enshrined\u00a0in the new Integrated Maritime Policy and Marine Strategy Framework\u00a0Directive and forms the basis of MSP. This concept is intended to encompass\u00a0all aspects of an ecosystem, including the human element. Yet the modes of\u00a0including meaningful public participation in the decision-making process for\u00a0MSP remain undetermined. At the same time, the Aarhus Convention (on Access\u00a0to Information, Public Participation in Decision Making and Access to\u00a0Justice in Environmental Matters) empowers non-governmental organisations to\u00a0hold EU Member States to account. Consequently the issue of transparency\u00a0will gain increased importance, as will linkages between human and\u00a0environmental rights. Such public interest-based activism on the part of\u00a0NGOs has the potential to enforce the developing framework for stakeholder\u00a0engagement within MSP, but it also has implications worth considering\u00a0regarding the appropriate role of interest-based organizations in the\u00a0international political arena.\u00a0The author’s version of the published paper is available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
